What are toughened CA adhesives?
Otherwise called toughened super glue or rubber toughened, toughened CA adhesives offer impact and shock resistance.The most common toughening agent we come across is rubber which is used to absorb and distribute impact and stress in the bondline forming a tougher bond. This typically results in a more flexible bond that can resist a wider range of temperatures and outdoor conditions like moisture and humidity.
How can you extend the shelf life of a cyanoacrylate?
We recommend you store unopened bottles in the refrigerator. After the CA adhesive has been opened store it at room temperature, around 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Refrigerating after opening will cause the moisture contents to condense and prematurely cure.
Once a bottle is open, make sure that the nozzle is kept clean and tightly sealed. Storing your CA adhesive in an air-tight container with silica gel to remove internal moisture will also prolong shelf life.
What is blooming?
When un-reacted cyanoacrylate particles evaporate, they react with moisture in the environment. When they fall back down they leave a whiteish residue behind. Though this residue does not significantly impact the bond, in some cases it can be displeasing to look at. In applications where blooming is detrimental to the finish, a low bloom cyanoacrylate is an option.
How to remove super glue from bonded fingers?
Inserting a toothpick, pen or pencil point into the bondline and rolling the item should be enough to inflict peel force and get your fingers free. If this doesn't work, acetone is one of the best at home solvents for cyanoacrylate.
What is a CA accelerator for?
A cyanoacrylate can be applied either before or after applying your CA adhesive. These accelerators are useful in especially cold or dry conditions where quick bonding is required to increase the gap filling or cure speed.
